What's New in the Puente-Chino Hills
National Park Service Review of the Puente-Chino Hills! The Draft Special Resource Study is now out and the Park Service is looking for public comments by December 16th.
During the initial study stages the environmental community asked the Park Service to take the best of the existing alternatives and create a new alternative. Well they have done just that and created Alternative D.
Alternative D will create a San Gabriel Region National Recreation Area stretching from the Angeles National Forest to the Puente-Chino Hills, and has the following highlights:
- A larger NRA focused on conservation of significant resources, recreation, and education
- Enhanced access to existing public lands
- New recreation opportunities for urban communities
- Protection of significant resources
- Interpretive and educational programs and outreach to youth
- Technical assistance program to form a network of parks, habitats, and open spaces
- Various public and private funding sought to achieve goals
Tell them that you strongly support Alternative D and tell them why it is important that the Angeles National Forest, the San Gabriel Valley, the San Gabriel River, the Whittier Narrows, and the Puente-Chino Hills need to be joined into a National Recreation Area.
You can review the report, see the public hearing schedule, and comment on-line (see the "Contact Us" link to the left) at www.nps.gov/pwro/sangabriel.
